Rochester, MN—Gerrard Corporation of La Crosse, WI will be breaking ground Friday, May 18th, for a new mixed use building in downtown Rochester, MN. The building will be located at 515 1st Ave Southwest, near the YMCA, Soldier's Field, and the Mayo Clinic. "Metropolitan Market Place" will be home to The People's Food Coop on the ground level, and will include furnished studios, and one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments in the upper levels, along with underground parking. The apartments will be ready for occupancy in August of 2013, and the People's Food Coop is slated to open then as well.

Says Peter Gerrard, "This development has evolved to align with the new downtown master plan. It's really a perfect fit for an energetic and vibrant downtown Rochester. The People's Food Coop will offer a wonderful selection of fresh, organic groceries which the health-conscious Rochester community is sure to appreciate; and the apartments will offer the convenience that many Mayo Clinic health professionals, UM Rochester faculty members, and others are looking for in urban housing. We're very excited to be a part of the Rochester community."

As the project developer, Gerrard Corporation will be working with their long-term construction partner, Wieser Brothers General Contractor of La Crescent, MN. Environmental efficiency will be a big priority for the building and its locale; one of the "greenest" aspects of this development is its walkable location. Additionally, many green building techniques will be used; and the completed building will feature high-efficiency central heating and cooling, and super-insulated walls and ceilings to help keep energy costs low. Says Jeff Wieser, "We strive to incorporate green building solutions into all of our projects, and are proud to construct this distinctive building that will enhance and serve the Rochester community."

The People's Food Coop is a community-owned store and currently has one location in downtown La Crosse, where it has been immensely successful. On behalf of the Co-op, General Manager Michelle Schry says, "PFC is excited to become a part of the downtown Rochester community. We look forward to creating a new gathering place that brings people together around things we all care about—building our community connections around quality food, grown locally and organically by our friends and neighbors whenever possible, and fostering good nutrition and excellent health for all those we touch." With more and more focus on healthy eating—and the proximity of Mayo Clinic—the Co-op will be providing a needed, and welcome, service to the downtown Rochester area.
